Tapping coached the Sandringham Dragons to the TAC Cup premiership in 2011 after leading the elite under 18 side for three seasons.

Prior to that he coached Old Brighton in the VAFA from 1997 until 2001, winning the flag in his first season and finishing as runner up in 2000. He then coached Old Scotch in the VAFA from 2002 until 2005, taking them to preliminary finals in 2002 and 2003. After a year out of the coaching system, Tapping became an assistant coach with the Western Jets under 18 team in the TAC Cup in 2007.

Tapping joined the Sandringham Dragons in 2009. He was the TAC Cup Coach of the Year in 2010, and capped off his stint at Trevor Barker Beach Oval with the 2011 TAC Cup premiership.

In his prime, Tapping played 105 games for Prahran in the VFA (now the VFL) from 1984 until 1992 where he was an accomplished midfielder. He was on Melbourne's senior list in 1988, but did not play a senior game.

Tapping played for Old Xaverians in the VAFA from 1993-1996, where he was a member of their 1995 and 1996 premiership teams and represented the VAFA in 1993 and 1994.

He arrives at Collingwood alongside Jackson Paine, who he coached at Sandringham in 2010 and 2011.
