Collingwood History

Established in 1892, the Collingwood Football Club is the biggest and most famous sporting club in Australia. The Magpies have won 15 VFL/AFL premierships, and have contested more Grand Finals (43 - including two in 1977 and 2010) than any other club.

It was said upon the club's formation on February 12 1892 that "The very name of Collingwood would strike terror into the hearts of opposing players". Although Collingwood was considered to be one of the poorest socioeconomic areas in Melbourne at the time, the people of the suburb supported the club like no other. With the players adhering to team discipline and displaying an unbreakable spirit, the Magpies grew into one of the most powerful teams in the VFL by the mid 1930s by which time the club had recorded 11 premierships.

In the years following 1936, Collingwood has collected only four premierships, but remains the most famous sporting club in the country. The club endured a 32-year premiership drought between its 1958 and 1990 successes, but in that time featured in nine Grand Finals, losing eight and drawing one.

After the 1990 flag, the Magpies endured a steady decline that was marked by a wooden spoon in 1999. Yet within three years, the club came within nine points of another premiership, highlighting its ability to never say die. Two years later, Collingwood left Victoria Park, its home since its 1892 formation, and moved its training and administration to Olympic Park in Melbourne's sport and entertainment precinct. The following seasons saw the Magpies gradually regenerate before claiming the 2010 premiership in extraordinary circumstances.

With 15 premierships, a record membership base of 72,728 and a list comprising eight All-Australians and the 2011 Brownlow Medalist, Collingwood is set to remain a force within the AFL landscape for many years to come.
