Collingwood opened its account in 2012 with a seven-point victory over the Western Bulldogs in the first game of the NAB Cup.

In the first of its two matches this evening, the Magpies overcame a slow start to hit top gear in the second half.

Dale Thomas and Dane Swan continued on from where they left off in 2011, leading the way in the centre. Swan’s hard running, in particular, set the example for his younger teammates.

Several young Magpies fired, including Western Australian rookie Marley Williams who nailed two goals in the second half. Peter Yagmoor was silky at half back, and Paul Seedsman gave a glimpse of things to come in the defensive fifty.

First Half
A late goal to Chris Dawes helped Collingwood to a two-point lead at half time of its first NAB Cup match against the Western Bulldogs.

The Magpies made a slow start with the humidity taking its toll on both teams. Much of the opening half was played between the two 50-metre arcs as the two sides acclimatised to the tempo of the game.

Bulldogs’ skipper Matthew Boyd kicked the first major of the game, dribbling through a Daicos-like goal from the forward pocket.

It was left to Dawes to kick the Magpies’ first of the night when he ran into an open goal with minutes remaining.

Sporting his new look cropped hairdo, Dale Thomas was his old self in the midfield. He helped himself to eight disposals in the opening half, while Simon Buckley found seven touches at half back.

Ruckman Jonathon Ceglar began the half well at half forward, rotating with senior ruck partner Darren Jolly.

Premiership forward Brent Macaffer left the field midway through the half assisted by trainers after appearing to injure his leg.

Second Half
Eighteen-year-old Western Australian Marley Williams was the star of the show with two goals after being brought on from the interchange late in the first quarter.

Starting as a substitute, Williams replaced the injured Brent Macaffer and made a bright start to his career with seven disposals and a goal.

Dane Swan kicked the goal of the night, breaking from a throw-in backward of the wing to clear. He was rewarded for his hard running into attack when he found himself metres in the clear, allowing him to run unopposed into an open goal.

Dale Thomas continued to lead the way in the midfield and Steele Sidebottom produced a strong second half.
