The six Collingwood men that stood around the contest against Geelong played terrific football at the MCG on Friday night.

Brodie Grundy stood in the ruck at the opening bounce, with Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams and Levi Greenwood at his feet.

Jack Crisp and Jordan De Goey knew that once the centre clearance had passed, Pendlebury was going to slip back to the half-back line and they would both assume the role of onballers.

It was a plan by Nathan Buckley that clearly came as a surprise, but certainly paid off.

With the Magpies successfully taking out a 48-point victory, every player mentioned above received votes in round 22 of the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.

Adams came first and took out the maximum number of points from Buckley and Chris Scott after a game which comprised of 36 disposals, 12 clearances and eight marks.

In his new role as a floating ‘quarterback’ who was tasked with directing the play, Pendlebury followed with seven votes.

The captain moves to 67 votes for the season. He leads all Magpies and sits eighth in the AFL in votes tallied in 2015.

With the top sides in the AFL set to rest key players this weekend, another good game from Pendlebury could see his name move higher on the list of players most highly recognised by coaches for their performances throughout the season.

After blanketing Richmond captain Trent Cotchin in round 21, Greenwood succeeded in another shut-down job on Friday night.

His fiery battle with Geelong’s Joel Selwood saw the ex-North Melbourne onballer receive his first three AFLCA Player of the Year votes of the season.

De Goey and Crisp follow as they reach the concluding stages on their first years in the black and white, while ruckman Grundy also polled two votes.

With one round remaining in the AFL season, Sydney’s Dan Hannebery has finally moved within striking distance with Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe at the top of the leaderboard.

Fyfe will once again sit on the sidelines with injury this weekend, while Hannebery takes on the Gold Coast Suns at the SCG.
