Chris Mayne performed well in his first match for Collingwood's VFL team.

It wasn’t easy, but the VFL Magpies fought their way to a narrow two-point victory over Coburg to open their 2017 account on a winning note.

Returning from injury, Jordan De Goey was clinical for the Magpies in the low-scoring affair, slotting three goals and collecting 26 disposals in a best on ground performance.

Defender Lynden Dunn led Collingwood’s defence with 31 touches, while his AFL counterpart Chris Mayne proved to be the difference in the second half, kicking two goals.

It was a day out for defender Jordan Kelly, who topped off his 20-disposals with a victory-clinching goal in the dying moments of the contest.

THE BEST

2. Jordan De Goey
Statistics:
14 kicks, 6 marks, 12 handballs, 26 disposals, 9 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 3 tackles, 3 goals

Notes:
In his first game back since breaking his knuckle, De Goey proved to be a class-above at VFL level. Two first-quarter goals set the 21-year-old up for a day out against Coburg and an impressive return to football. With nine clearances, eight hardball gets and 16 contested possessions, De Goey’s impact in a fiercely contested midfield battle was influential.

“He played a really important role for us. Jordy was quite dominant in the middle and when we played him forward. He’s been super,” Rivers told Collingwood Media’s From Lulie Street.

15. Lynden Dunn
Statistics:
21 kicks, 12 marks, 10 handballs, 31 disposals, 0 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 6 rebound 50s, 0 tackles

Notes:
He may have been playing in Coburg, but you could probably hear Lynden Dunn barking orders at his defensive group from back at the Holden Centre. In a game where the final outcome was in the balance for most of the second half, a composed Dunn was the reliable pillar in the Magpies’ back six.

“Dunny starred down back. It was his best game for us in the VFL, so hopefully he’s pushing for selection,” Rivers said of his experienced defender’. With 31 touches in the defensive half at a rate of 90% efficiency, combined with his 12 marks, the 29-year-old proved vital to Collingwood’s round one victory.

16. Chris Mayne
Statistics:
10 kicks, 7 marks, 6 handballs, 16 disposals, 0 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 4 tackles, 2 goals

Notes:
After a quiet first half, a determined Chris Mayne forced his way back into the contest against Coburg. On a day where goals where hard to come by, Mayne’s clean hands and his ability to present as a key forward target proved too much for his Lions opponent after the long break. From five scoring shots, he kicked two goals; but his six marks and four tackles epitomised why his pressure in the forward half is invaluable to his team.

48. Lachlan Tardrew
Statistics:
6 kicks, 5 marks, 11 handballs, 17 disposals, 2 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50, 3 tackles

Notes:
The 19-year-old was one of the key performers in a VFL-led midfield on the weekend. Playing along side Alex Woodward and Nick Gray, Tardrew worked tirelessly to stem the flow of a formidable Coburg midfield in the second half. Every one of his kicks hit the target, while work rate around the ground didn’t go unnoticed.

Said Rivers: “Lachie’s been really important for us over the preseason and you saw in round one his ability to get back and defend, but also to provide an attacking option for us going forward.”

60. Jordan Kelly
Statistics:
13 kicks, 7 marks, 7 handballs, 20 disposals, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 2 tackles, 1 goal

Notes:
Dubbed the ‘ice man’ by his coach, Kelly calmly slotted a crucial goal with minutes to play against Coburg to save Collingwood from a shock defeat. After pressing up to ensure the ball stayed in Collingwood’s forward 50, the defender happened to be in the right place, right time when a Coburg player turned over the ball straight to him. With a passionate Lions crowd jeering him, Kelly’s kick never looked in doubt, as he clinched victory for his Magpies.

“He kicked a really crucial goal for us. I backed him in. It was a great kick,” Rivers said of Kelly’s clutch goal. The kick was the cherry on top of a great performance by Kelly, adding 20 disposals and seven marks to his day’s work.

46. Mason Cox
Statistics:
9 kicks, 6 marks, 10 handballs, 19 disposals, 8 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50, 2 tackles, 1 goal, 34 hit-outs

Notes:
In a pre-season where Cox was played both forward and in the ruck, the 211cm returned to his favoured position on the weekend, rucking for majority of the contest. With 34 hit outs, he provided his Collingwood midfielders with first use of the ball. His day didn’t end there, with the big man amassing 19 disposals (13 contested), six marks and eight clearances of his own. Cox was on the end of a favourable Collingwood 50m penalty in the third term, making no mistake in front of goal to keep the Magpies in front in the seesawing contest.
