‘Quirky’ Phillips' hard work pays off
AFL Players Association - 23 May 2017

The Oakleigh Chargers are well known for producing AFL-ready players.

The likes of Marc Murphy, Luke Shuey, Dan Hannebery and Toby Greene — just to name a few — spring to mind when thinking of their recent success stories.

Collingwood’s selection in the 2015 draft, Tom Phillips, is no exception.

…Described as ‘quirky’ by his former coach, he was an essential player due to his versatility.

He became known around the club for shutting down an opposition player while still having the ability to collect 30 possessions of his own.

Phillips has shown in his 13-game AFL career that he can run a game out with ease and his former coach sees shades of another AFL iron man in him.

“I’d say he’s a Tom Scully-type player, he has that ability to run all day,” Oakleigh coach Mark Stinear said.

‘Special’ team but heat still on Magpies

Nathan Buckley has lauded his "special" group of players, with the Collingwood coach adamant that the "pall" over the club won't be lifted until later in the year.

Buckley was full of praise for his players and their ability to perform under pressure, despite the constant speculation surrounding his future.

It comes as the coach reiterates his side's ability to play a strong brand of football, although he conceded it has to be done on a more consistent basis.

Bounce not an issue: Buckley
The Age – 24 May 2017

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley believes the future of the bounce is a non-issue, declaring it is “not that important”.

Reports emerged on Monday night that the Umpires Association had lodged documents with the AFL seeking an independent medical investigation into the physical ramifications of bouncing the ball.

…When asked if he (Buckley) had a strong feeling either way regarding the bounce, Buckley said he didn’t really care. “No, no not really. I used to. It’s really not that important. I like the idea that… if you’ve got an umpire who can bounce the ball well… then do that.”

Cursed Pie close
Herald Sun – 24 May 2017

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has stopped short of endorsing injury-cursed Matthew Scharenberg to replace James Aish against Brisbane Lions on Sunday.

Aish has been ruled out for up to a month with the depressed fracture in his cheekbone suffered in Saturday’s come-from-behind win against Hawthorn.

…Scharenberg’s VFL form has caught the eye, averaging 36 disposals and 10 marks in his past three games.

“Shaz is putting together a really good block of VFL form, obviously getting a lot of the footy, but all he can continue to do is play the role that’s expected of him, in the manner that he’s gone about it, (and) his opportunity is going to come soon enough,” Buckley said yesterday.

Black and White coup
Herald Sun – 24 May 2017

Collingwood recruit Jaimee Lambert believes she will bring midfield grunt to the Magpies in what appears a recruiting coup for the club.

The tenacious onballer/forward was the Western Bulldogs’ first pick in last year’s AFLW draft, but her season was cruelled by a debilitating hip injury.

The Magpies have lost best-and-fairest Nicola Stevens and vice-captain Alicia Eva, so the Lambert signing is a much-needed boost.
