Amid the disappointment of Collingwood’s 24-point loss to Hawthorn were two performances many will hope to see more of in the future.

And they weren’t from the names who star on a weekly basis.

Former Oakleigh Chargers Jordan De Goey and Tom Phillips both recorded career-high disposal tallies in impressive showings against the Hawks.

For De Goey, more time in the midfield led to a 32-possession game which surpassed his previous best midway through the third quarter.

He used the ball at an impressive 84.4 per cent efficiency and recorded team highs in score assists (three), inside 50s (eight) and metres gained (469m).

“Today was pretty much the first time I got a full game in (the midfield),” De Goey told Collingwood Media post game.

“In 40 games you build a lot of confidence. Week in, week out you just keep trying to improve and better yourself on and off the track.”

Both young guns are currently enjoying the continuity of regular games at AFL level. De Goey has played eight straight since injury and club-enforced suspension, while Phillips has started in 13 of a possible 14 matches this season.

The elite runner had 29 touches and kicked a crucial goal to level the scores midway through the second quarter.

The game comes after Phillips earned league-wide recognition with a Rising Star nomination coming in the Magpies' last clash with the Hawks.

The strong performances weren’t lost on coach Nathan Buckley who highlighted the pair among Collingwood’s other inexperienced players post-match.

“We’ve got some young fellas who are playing some really important roles for us ahead of their time,” Buckley said in his press conference.

“They’re going to grow from that and I think the Collingwood supporters should be excited about what they see. They’ve got some players who are going to take this club forward.”
