VFL squad to take on the Roosters

Sam Gastin  August 10, 2017 6:20 PM

The VFL Pie who had Etihad chanting Watch as VFL coach Jared Rivers and president Marcus Wagner discuss all the action during Collingwood's round 16 VFL clash with Werribee.

Collingwood’s VFL side will play its final game at Victoria Park for the seaosn on Sunday when it meets the North Ballarat Roosters.

The Magpies’ are bolstered by 14 AFL-listed names on the team-sheet, however at least four will be called into the senior side when the final AFL team is lodged at 5pm on Friday.

The rest will take their talents to Collingwood’s spiritual home for a 1pm start with significant finals ramifications.

The Magpies’ sit one game outside the VFL top eight, with a percentage of 90.8 and games against Geelong and Port Melbourne to conclude the season.

“We’ve just got to keep building and we’ve got to keep winning,” coach Jared Rivers said this week on the quest to play September football.

“We’ve got three great opportunities to win, but if we don’t play the way we want to play, it’s going to be hard.”

On paper, Sunday’s clash with North Ballarat appears extremely winnable.

The Roosters sit 14th on the ladder with one win in 2017. That victory however, came just three weeks ago against the Carlton-affiliated Northern Blues.

Ex-Western Bulldog Andrew Hooper was dangerous in front of goal against the Blues in round 14, while VFL veteran Nick Rippon was named best on ground.

The Magpies’ have their own share of in-form players. Kayle Kirby extended his lead of the Jim ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal (VFL leading goalkicker) with five majors against Werribee last weekend, while defender Marty Hore has had his strong form acknowledged with an invitation to the State Combine in October.

Defender Jackson Ramsay returns to the side this week after watching on as the Pies defeated Werribee by 32 points on Saturday.

Entry into Victoria Park is free for all members of the Magpie Army wishing to watch the VFL team in action.
