A second-half fade out proved costly as Collingwood fell eight-points short of Box Hill in round 18 of the VFL season.

The Magpies led by 24 points at half time, but could manage only two goals after the main break as the Hawks came roaring back.

A strong wind blowing to the Whitehorse Road end of the Box Hill City Oval was a major factor for both sides. Box Hill used the breeze well, and kicked cleverly into it late in the final quarter, while the Magpies struggled to convert their chances, kicking nine behinds in the final term.

A goal to Andrew Gallucci drew the Pies within a kick, and a handful of behinds brought the margin back to two points with five minutes to go.

But the Hawks steadied, with two late goals sealing a win that may have ramifications for both sides’ top-four aspirations.

For Collingwood, Jarryd Blair, Marty Hore, Alex Woodward and Sam McLarty all performed strongly, while captain Jack Hellier played a key role, kicking two first half goals.
