AFLW: Pies upbeat as season opener nears

AFLW: Joint session with Magpies Netball Collingwood's AFLW and netball teams combined for a training session at the Holden Centre on Wednesday.

Collingwood AFLW coach Wayne Siekman is delighted with the way his players have ramped up their training since returning from their Christmas break.

The Pies are reaching the pointy end of their preparations, with the team heading to Ballarat for a practice match against the Western Bulldogs on January 19.

They will then travel to Geelong to take on the Cats in round one of the AFLW season on Saturday, February 2.

“Things are shaping really well,” Siekman told collingwoodfc.com.au.

The players completed a two-kilometre time trial on Monday evening, with 19 players recording personal best times.

They then participated in a joint training session with Collingwood Super Netball team at the Holden Centre on Wednesday evening.

The training session consisted of 45 minutes of footy-related drills and 45 minutes of netball-related work.

“It was a great experience,” Siekman said. “I think both groups would have got plenty out of it.”

Netball coach Rob Wright was also happy with the way the joint training session played out.

“Great learning from both groups - a great opportunity to share ideas,” Wright said.

In his first season as the Magpies’ head coach, Wright is overseeing a new-look squad, with five of his 10 players arriving at the club since the end of last season.

“There’s a really good vibe around it,” Wright said. “I actually feel like it’s the same in the AFLW. I’ve been to a couple of their sessions already and it feels very different this year, I think, to last year.

“It’s the same with us. We’ve literally just started (our pre-season) on Monday, but I’m excited with what we’ve got so far.”

Collingwood’s 2019 Super Netball campaign kicks off with a home match against the Sunshine Coast Lightning at Melbourne Arena on Saturday, April 27.
