Collingwood outplayed a strong Williamstown outfit to earn a spot in next week's preliminary final; Collingwood 13.16 (94) to Williamstown 7.12 (54).

In extremely windy conditions, the VFL Magpies built a five-goal first quarter lead and eventually ran out 40-point winners.

Ben Reid, Kevin Dyas, Jarryd Blair, Chris Bryan and Kris Pendlebury (VFL-listed player) were all named in the best for the VFL side.

"I was very impressed by the way they attacked the game," VFL head coach Gavin Brown told Collingwoodfc.com.au on Monday.

"Right from the jump they were aggressive, hard and selfless."

The VFL Magpies will now face North Ballarat in the Second Preliminary Final on Saturday 19 September at 2pm.

AFL-listed players and comments by VFL head coach Gavin Brown

3.  John McCarthy (9k, 13h, 3m, 2g, 1t):  I thought he was solid without being fantastic.  We played him with a little less game time because he was an emergency.

12.  Shannon Cox (7k, 4h, 2m, 6t):  I thought Coxy was pretty good coming back after missing a few weeks.  He handled the heat really well.  His defensive effort was pleasing.

14. Anthony Corrie (7k, 5h, 1g, 9t):  Good without getting high numbers.  He showed wonderful leadership with his hardness at the ball.

18. Marty Clarke (18k, 11h, 4m, 3t):  Absolutely fantastic.  Running off half back he showed wonderful blocking ability down in defence.

20. Ben Reid  (14k, 13h, 6m, 1g, 1t):  Played centre halfback on Jason Cloke and was wonderful.  An all around terrific game.

27. Jarrad Blight (6k, 6h, 3m, 1g, 5t):  Was very solid.  He played back and small stints on the wing.

28. Danny Stanley (16k, 11h, 5m, 2g, 4t):  Second week in a row he was exceptional.  Good use of the footy and has a terrific set of hands.

29. Ryan Cook  (10k, 10h, 4m, 6t):  Normally gets a bit more of the ball but he was very rock solid.  Played his role very well.

31. Chris Dawes  (9k, 7h, 5m, 2g, 2t):  Good considering the conditions with the wind.  Aggressive with his leading.

37. Luke Rounds (7k, 5h, 1m, 7t):  Played more as a crumbing forward.  Worked hard and used his pace.

38. Scott Reed (13k, 11h, 2m, 1g, 1t):  Wing, forward and back.  He played everywhere.  His tackling was first class.

40. Chris Bryan (10k, 4h, 3m, 1t):  Played mostly in the ruck and he competed really well.  Gave us first use of the footy on a number of occasions.

41. Kevin Dyas (4k, 4h, 2t):  Was terrific on Patrick Rose.  He had to play one-on-one in Williamstown’s forward line and was great.

43. Jaxson Barham (11k, 10h, 3m, 1g, 1t): Solid and showed good usage.

44. Lachlan Keeffe  (8k, 5h, 3m, 2t):  Has been playing as a key backman for the last six weeks and his touch was first class.

45. Toby Thoolen  (4k, 3h, 1m, 2t):  Gave a contest up forward.

47. Jarryd Blair (7k, 15h, 2m, 1g, 5t):  Dynamite.  Head over the footy and won a lot of his own ball.

48. John Bennell  (7k, 4h, 2m, 1g, 5t):  Slashed in and out of times.  Took a nice one hander.
