VFL head coach Gavin Brown praised his side’s resilience in its 58-point win over Werribee on Saturday night.

Coming off a disappointing loss last weekend to the Bendigo Bombers, the VFL Magpies impressed Brown with their effort and enthusiasm for the contest across the four quarters.

“I thought their attitude and effort was first class,” Brown told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“We have now won two tough away games and will be looking for our first victory at home this weekend.”

The side fielded 21 AFL-listed players led by the experience of Tarkyn Lockyer and Leigh Brown with both players kicking three goals in the round four win.

“Leigh Brown and Tarkyn Lockyer provided real leadership and experience.  It was a fantastic opportunity for our younger blokes to play with experienced AFL players.

“Unfortunately we were really hamstrung by injury particularly in the last quarter when we didn’t have an interchange and we were forced to tread water towards the end of the game.”

The side lost Sean Rusling (calf), John McCarthy (hamstring), Tristan Francis (quad) and Ben Sinclair (concussion) to injury.  Click here to read the updated injury list.

The VFL Magpies will be looking for their first win at home against Geelong on Saturday at 1 pm at Victoria Park.

Brown’s assessment on the AFL-listed players (includes Tom Young - NSW scholarship list)

2. Sean Rusling (1k, 4h, 1m): Unfortunately got injured very early.  Very disappointing for him.

3. John McCarthy (5k, 5h, 3m, 3t): Another one who went down reasonably early.

6. Tyson Goldsack (8k, 8h, 3t): Was our captain on the night.  He has proven himself with his performances over the last two weeks.  Out on the ground he is leading not only by example but also by voice.

9. John Anthony (12k, 8h, 6m, 5g, 2t):  Exceptional.  Jack’s defensive pressure was what was really pleasing.  That aspect set up the team and his game.

11.  Shane O’Bree (15k, 15h, 2m, 2t):  Really good.  He ran across the ground strongly.  He is ready to go.  As soon as the senior side needs him, he will be ready to go.

15. Leigh Brown (14k, 7h, 8m, 3g, 3t):  Could have kicked five but had a great game.  Ready to go.

19. Cameron Wood (8k, 5h, 3m, 2g, 2t):  Very good.  Marking the ball really well.  His touches were good.  His ruck work was great.  Ready to go if they need him.

24. Tarkyn Lockyer (12k, 9h, 5m, 3g, 7t):   Like Leigh Brown had a real impact on the game.  He was terrific.

27. Jarrad Blight (3k, 12h, 1m, 2t):  Going really well off halfback and on the wing.  Gave us great drive.

28. Ben Sinclair (3k, 2h, 2m, 1t):  Unfortunately got a concussion and couldn’t finish the game.  He shows a heck of a lot.

29. Ryan Cook (19k, 14h, 3m, 3t):  Got plenty of the footy.  Great leadership.

37: Luke Rounds (12k, 10h, 3m, 2g, 5t): His attack on the footy was first class.  Played mainly as a small forward.

38. Scott Reed (10k, 4h, 5m, 2g, 4t):  Kicked a couple of goals.  His offensive run was really good.  Played really well up forward.

40. Josh Thomas (11k, 4h, 3m, 1t):  For his first game was very clean.  Had great composure.  Made terrific decisions.  To be able to come back and have that impact is amazing.

43. Jaxson Barham (11k, 11h, 4m, 6t):  His burst running really set us up.

44. Lachlan Keeffe (5k, 7h, 1t): Terrific effort coming back from concussion from the week before.  Was a general down at halfback.

45. Tom Hunter (16k, 12h, 2m, 1g, 2t): Running off the wing and halfback.  Phenomenal game.  His execution was great.

46. Tristan Francis (7k, 2h, 2m, 3t):  Was flying early but hurt himself.

47. Jarryd Blair (7k, 12h, 2m, 5t):  Won his own ball.  Only had five uncontested possessions which means he won most of his own footy.

48. Jack Carter (4k, 7h, 1m):  Key back.  Played in front.  Contested really well.  Best game for the club.

49. Tom Young (10k, 11h, 6m):  Off halfback.  Mopped up everything.  Elite composure for a young fella.

50. Shae McNamara (6k, 1h, 1m, 1g, 3t):  Up against Majak Daw in the ruck.  It proved to be a good contest.
