Mooney made some noticeable improvements to his game in his second season on the rookie list. The Irishman averaged more disposals, clearances and inside 50s per game than he did in 2012 and had 34 scoring shots (up on his 20 in 2012). He was a regular contributor at half forward throughout the season, bobbing up to kick important goals at just the right time. He returned from a two week layoff with injury to kick five straight goals in windy conditions against Williamstown in round five which saw him handed a ticket to the senior game against Fremantle in Perth six days later. Starting as the substitute, Mooney came into the game during the third quarter and looked lively with eight possessions and three tackles. He put Collingwood in front with a goal early in the last quarter but then left the field after rolling his ankle. He returned to the VFL and quietly went about his business, kicking three in the win over Coburg in round 10. Mooney returned to the seniors for the trip to the Gold Coast in round 17 but struggled to get into the game after starting as the substitute (three disposals, three tackles). The rest of his season was spent in the VFL where he kicked two late goals to seal the deal against Werribee in round 19 and had three scoring shots against Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final.
