An inside midfielder with a booming right foot and sure hands overhead, Martin impressed greatly in his 13 VFL games in 2013. He earned some big possession tallies and regularly impacted on the scoreboard despite being heavily tagged each week. He broke through to play senior football mid-season and did not look out of place. His hard-nosed approach and appetite for goals will make him a player to watch in 2014.

Martin’s meteoric rise from local football to the biggest stage of all was one of the best stories of 2013. Collingwood snaffled him with its first selection in last December’s Rookie Draft after initial interest from Essendon and Melbourne and he quickly set about making a name for himself as a proven ball magnet. He was given an opportunity in the NAB Cup and quickly looked at home, averaging 12 disposals and winning four clearances against the Eagles in Perth. The ex-Frankston centreman burst out of the blocks at VFL level, winning 34 possessions and kicking three goals in the first round win over North Ballarat. It prompted opposition teams to start paying closer attention and Werribee and Frankston were able to restrict him to only 29 disposals across the next fortnight. He sprung to life with 36 touches against Bendigo and rarely let up, saving his best for Essendon in round seven when he had 29 possessions, won 10 clearances and kicked six goals from the midfield. The match committee put him straight on the plane to the Gabba to take on Brisbane the following Friday and he did not look out of place, gathering 19 possessions, laying six tackles and kicking two goals from four scoring shots. Martin held his place in the side for the next three games, booting three goals against Melbourne on the Queen’s Birthday. His run came to an end when he was substituted out of the match against Port Adelaide during the third quarter, leaving him to spend the remainder of the season accumulating big numbers in the VFL. He almost singlehandedly dragged the Magpies over the line against North Ballarat and was one of the best afield in the loss to Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final despite receiving close attention from his Borough opponents. Martin’s fine season was capped off when he won the Joseph Wren Memorial Trophy as Collingwood’s best-and-fairest VFL player, while he also received nine votes in the J.J. Liston Trophy across the course of the year.

Season By Season

The inside midfielder was the Pies' first selection in the 2013 Rookie Draft after a consistent year playing for Frankston in the VFL where he averaged 26 possessions a game and won the club's best-and-fairest. Can also push forward and possesses a big kick and strong marking ability.
