Originally recruited from WAFL club East Fremantle, Lockyer will go down as one of the great success stories of the rookie list system. He came onto the Magpies’ rookie list in 1998 and was elevated onto the senior list one year later before making his debut in the win over Fremantle in round eight, 1999.

Lockyer finished in the top five in the Copeland Trophy on four occasions (2000 - 2nd, 2001 - 5th, 2002 - 4th, 2007 - 3rd). He was able to admirably overcome having large parts of 2003 and 2004 ruined by serious knee and foot injuries, and went onto play a remarkable 136 consecutive games from round 10, 2004, through to round four, 2010. He proved himself to be a consistent ball winner, who began as a neat back pocket player, progressed to become one of Mick Malthouse's first choice midfielders before ending his career as a reliable small forward.

He took over the coaching reigns of the VFL side from Gavin Brown at the end of the 2010 season, and although the team won only four games in 2011, it produced five new debutants and an AFL draftee (Tom Couch, who was rookie listed by Melbourne).

In 2012, he will be supported by Craig McRae (development manager), Anthony Rocca (backline development coach), Dale Tapping (midfield development coach) and Mitch Hahn (forward line development coach).
