In one of the best games of the 2011 VFL season, Collingwood went down to Bendigo by five points at Victoria Park.

Recap the live play-by-play coverage below.

The momentum seesawed from one team to the other, as Collingwood opened the day with a seven goal to none first quarter. From there, Bendigo outgunned the Magpies with 14 goals to seven for the remainder of the day.

Collingwood’s best was NSW Scholarship holder Jarrod Witts, who was outstanding with three goals and had 15 disposals. His performance at full forward was excellent considering his inexperience at VFL level, and the timing of his leads improved as the day went on.

A handful of players again put their hands up for senior selection, with Tom Young at the forefront. He had 23 disposals and three marks in the midfield, but the most impressive aspect of his game was his 12 tackles. It is the second highest amount of tackles recorded by a Collingwood player in the VFL (Justin Crow had 14 against Box Hill in 2008).

John McCarthy again pressed his claims for a senior berth with 23 disposals, five tackles and three marks, and Tom Couch was tough in the clinches laying seven tackles and gathering 18 disposals.

The ruck contest between Cameron Wood and Tom Bellchambers resulted with both named in their respective side’s best players. Wood had 14 disposals, 12 hit outs and five marks.

Also good for Collingwood was Brent Macaffer, who was on track for his best game of the season (14 disposals) until he limped off the field in the second quarter.

Other big names Simon Buckley (19 disposals, nine rebound 50s), Kris Pendlebury (13 disposals, seven rebound 50s), Ben Sinclair (11 disposals, 6 tackles) and Paul Seedsmen (14 disposals, five tackles) performed well for four quarters.

Next week is Collingwood’s final VFL game of the season, hosting Sandringham at Victoria Park, starting at 1:00pm.
