Collingwood has named 16 premiership players as part of a strong 29-man NAB Cup squad, which includes experienced recruits Chris Tarrant and Andrew Krakouer.

Scott Pendlebury will lead the group in the absence of skipper Nick Maxwell, with the Magpies set to take on Richmond and Carlton at Docklands on Saturday night in the AFL’s revamped three-way opening round format of the pre-season competition.

Tarrant will make his first appearance in the black and white stripes since being traded to Fremantle at the end of 2006 after 161 games and 299 goals for the Magpies. At 30 years of age, he is the oldest player on Collingwood's list. Krakouer, 28, played 102 games for Richmond between 2001-07 and was picked up by the Magpies during the trade period last year after a stellar season for Swan Districts in the WAFL.

Harry O’Brien, Luke Ball, Dale Thomas, Leigh Brown, Dayne Beams, Darren Jolly, Steele Sidebottom, Sharrod Wellingham and Heath Shaw are also part of the powerful line-up, with all players keen to impress and ensure they are part of round one action on March 26.

Magpie fans will also able to catch a glimpse of a host of emerging players including Lachlan Keeffe, Tom Young, Alex Fasolo and Kirk Ugle on Saturday.

Rookie-listed players Scott Reed, Tom Hunter, Jack Perham and Jye Bolton have all impressed during the pre-season and have been rewarded with spots in the 29-man line-up.

Maxwell will be joined on the sidelines by reigning three-time Copeland Trophy winner Dane Swan and key forward Travis Cloke (all three not quite ready but not far away), while Alan Didak (shoulder), Nathan Brown (shoulder), Brad Dick (shoulder) and Tyson Goldsack (recovering from a virus) are all a chance to participate in the pre-season competition in coming weeks.

26 of the 29 players named in the squad will take on Richmond in the club’s first game on Saturday night, with teams playing consecutive games able to make three changes to their sides for the second match.
