VFL: Pies lose in the wet

A strong final quarter couldn’t get Collingwood over the line in its second VFL practice match of 2012 on Saturday, losing to Frankston by seven points (6.5.41 to 7.6.48).

Recap's live coverage of the match below.

Playing at Frankston Oval, the Magpies let the Dolphins sneak away to a good start when kicking with the breeze in the opening term, meaning the home side developed a lead it never relinquished.

Although they fought back hard in the second half and indeed looked the better team in the final term, the Pies were unable to convert their ample time in possession to a winning score.

Collingwood’s brightest star was Matthew Boland who kicked three goals in his first match for the club. Boland is originally from Sandringham where he made an impression as a key forward last year, but he crossed to Collingwood at the end of last season.

Corey Gault was the only senior listed Magpie to play. Four rookie listed players - Shae McNamara, Paul Cribbin, Trent Stubbs and Lachlan Smith - all played at various stages of the match. Smith was the standout, gathering high possession numbers playing mostly at half back.

Smith’s ability to read the play was the most impressive feature of his game, and his strength overhead in the wet did not go unnoticed.
