VFL: Pies defeat Bombers

Collingwood’s VFL team ended its pre-season on a high with a 10-point win over the Bendigo Bombers at Gosch’s Paddock on Friday.

The Magpies led all day but only got on the board with the final kick of the opening term when Luke Rounds kicked the first goal of the day.

Several AFL-listed Magpies were selected including Tyson Goldsack, Luke Rounds, Jarrod Witts, Dayne Beams, Cameron Wood, Sharrod Wellingham and Paul Seedsman as well as the rookie listed Trent Stubbs, Marley Williams and Shae McNamara.

The Essendon-affiliated Bendigo had only three AFL listed players - Nathan Lovett-Murray, Nicholas O’Brien and Cory Dell’Olio.

The suspended Wellingham played with intent and was clean around the packs all day. Beams was similarly impressive, while Wood’s work below his knees in his first match of the pre-season was impressive for a player of his size. He teamed well with first-year ruckman Jarrod Witts who used his body well at full forward and gave his side a reliable target inside 50.

Goldsack was another to stand out at half back where his ability to read the play and turn defence into attack made him a key to the side’s success.

It was a low-scoring affair marred by strong winds that pushed much of the play over to the Punt Rd side of the oval.

The conditions meant that accuracy in front of goal was compromised, but the Magpies were the dominant side for much of the first half and took a 13 point lead into the main break.

Although the likes of Rick Ladson lifted Bendigo in the second half, Collingwood managed to hold on to win by 10-points.

Collingwood 1.2, 4.2, 5.4, 6.7 (43)
Bendigo Bombers 0.0, 2.1, 3.1, 5.3 (33)

Goals - Collingwood: Rounds, Witts, Seccull, Williams, Lucevic, Cathcart.
