Collingwood has again turned to youth to cover injuries to two of its most talented players, naming teenage pair Jamie Elliott (19) and Marley Williams (18) to debut against the Adelaide Crows on Saturday night.

Dane Swan (hamstring) and Ben Reid (quad) are both sidelined after sustaining their respective injuries during last week’s thrilling win over Geelong.

The new pair come from vastly different football backgrounds but each received a taste of senior football during the NAB Cup and have strung together several strong performances for Collingwood’s VFL team.

Small forward Elliott, acquired as a pre-listed player during last October’s trade period, is a product of the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup and has impressed in his four matches in the VFL where he has managed seven goals splitting his time between the forward line and midfield.

Spending his afternoon at his mother’s takeaway shop in Euroa, Elliott described to collingwoodfc.com.au the prospect of a debut against one of the form sides of the competition as ‘surreal’.

“When Bucks told me I was over the moon. It was a bit surreal at the start. I didn’t really expect it and I’m just starting to realise it now, it’s just starting to kick in. I’m just trying to relax and enjoy it with my family and trying to focus on what I’ve got to do the for the weekend.”

Elliott said that Collingwood fans could expect to witness the debut of a player who is hard at the ball and has a manic approach to forward pressure.

“Hopefully (they see me) exactly how I’ve been playing my VFL footy.

“Hard at it, can win the ball, play in the forward line predominantly and keep it in and trap it in there, and lay as many tackles and kick a couple of goals as well. It’s more my defensive pressure and trying to keep the ball inside 50.”

His fellow debutant Marley Williams has traversed a different path to the big time. The 18-year-old hails from North Albany, four hours south of Perth. Williams, whose father is Maori, was working as a fencer when he received notice that the Magpies had recruited him with selection No. 35 in last year’s rookie draft.

“I was really shocked that I was actually picked in the team, but once I got told I was super happy and couldn’t keep the smile off my face,” Williams told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“It’s definitely been a blur. Seeing as I was picked as a rookie, I wasn’t really expecting to play this year and improving on what I’ve needed to do.”

Williams was officially promoted off the rookie list on Thursday morning in place of the injured Luke Ball. He will be the first player to wear the No. 46 for the Magpies since Andrew Dimattina (2000-2002; 28 games) in season 2000.

“They (supporters) should expect someone who’s not going to give up and is going to give everything that he’s got”.

The pair bring Collingwood's total of debutants for 2012 to six, following Jackson Paine, Paul Seedsman, Peter Yagmoor and Kirk Ugle who were all blooded earlier in the season. It will also mean that the club will have used 35 players in the opening nine games, behind only expansion clubs Gold Coast (37 players) and Greater Western Sydney (36).

Collingwood’s three emergencies on Saturday night will be South Australian native Cameron Wood and youngsters Tom Young and Kirk Ugle.

The club’s VFL team will have a bye this weekend due to the league's State of Origin match against Tasmanian State League.
