VFL Magpies fall short

Collingwood's hopes of featuring in the VFL finals series were dented by a five-point loss to fellow September aspirant North Ballarat at Eureka Stadium on Sunday.

Leading by three goals at half time, the Magpies were overrun in the second half, conceding 10 goals and kicking only six of their own.

They lost Caolan Mooney in the opening quarter after the Irishman had to be taken from the field on a stretcher following a collision with Bryce Curnow, meaning that they were robbed of one of their most potent attacking options.

In his absence, Kyle Martin stepped up to the plate. The 22-year-old kicked four goals and three behinds and was the driving force behind Collingwood's attempt to pull the match out of the fire in the dying stages.

Martin ended the day with 21 possessions (14 kicks, six handballs), six marks and four inside 50s.

He was well supported in the midfield by Andrew Krakouer (25 possessions; 11 kicks, 14 handballs, five clearances), Ben Kennedy (23 possessions; 12 kicks, 11 handballs) and Jack Hellier (23 possessions; 16 kicks, seven handballs, two clearances).

Promoted rookie Adam Oxley used the ball 25 times (21 kicks, four handballs) and rebounded out of his side's defensive 50m four times to go with his two inside 50s.

Collingwood's ruckmen also performed strongly. Jarrod Witts won 32 hitouts along with 20 possessions (11 kicks, nine handballs) while Ben Hudson contributed 15 hitouts of his own.

Supporters will also be interested to track the progress of Jake Kelly. The son of 1990 premiership legend Craig Kelly was selected as Collingwood's 23rd man and proved his worth with 11 possessions (three kicks, eight handballs).

The loss means that Collingwood is now in ninth position with two rounds remaining before the finals.

North Ballarat is level on points (eight wins each) but is slightly ahead on percentage.

Essendon is one game behind but was comprehensively beaten by Box Hill on Saturday.
