Famous surnames join VFL Pies

(From left): New VFL signings Kye Beveridge, Jackson Starcevich and Alex Mastromanno are quickly adjusting to life at the Holden Centre.

Two famous surnames return to Collingwood in 2017, with a Starcevich and a Beveridge joining the VFL Magpies.

Jackson Starcevich (son of 1990 Premiership player Craig) and Kye Beveridge (son of former Collingwood assistant coach and current Western Bulldogs senior coach Luke) are two new signings on a 31-man list.

The pair are joined by Old Brighton forward Alex Mastromanno as new players in a VFL side which will be led by first-time coach Jared Rivers.

Starcevich is a key forward who has spent time with Claremont in the WAFL and has more recently kicked 20 goals in eight games for Nightcliff in the Northern Territory Football League.

He says the opportunity to pull on the Black and White stripes for the VFL Magpies is a way to continue the legacy left at the club by his father.

“Growing up in Brisbane, footy was sheltered from me a bit. I wasn’t too interested in it in my junior days,” he told Collingwood Media.

“When I started getting a bit older and realised how much of an influence it had on Dad’s life, that’s when I started taking it a bit more seriously.

“Part of the reason I wanted to pursue this was sort of as a bucket list item for me to play at the same club that Dad did, even at a VFL level.

“I want to play as many VFL games as I can.”

Magpie fans may have spotted talented midfielder Beveridge playing amongst some senior-listed stars in the club’s intra-club game in February.

After spending 2016 with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup, Beveridge trained with the AFL side over the summer before taking up a place on the VFL list.

“Just to learn off the boys at training and in the intra-club game was amazing,” he said.

“To play on some of the big names at the club, that was pretty cool.

“I learnt a lot seeing how they play and where they run.”

Meanwhile, Mastromanno hopes to use a new-found wealth of resources at Collingwood to improve his standing as a promising forward.

“The experience so far has been a real eye-opener,” he said while reflecting on his first pre-season at the Holden Centre.

“Learning from the experienced players and developing from great coaches has been a really good experience.

“I’ve played as a forward almost my whole life but I’d like to develop into a more mobile and defensive-minded forward (this season).”

Under the guidance of Rivers and new VFL General Manager Chris Dixon, Collingwood has 20 players returning ahead of the 2017 season.

Other recruits, including former Hawk Alex Woodward and SANFL talents Michael Chippendale and Stephen Tahana were announced prior to Christmas by Collingwood Media.
