Collingwood goals came thick and fast at the Olympic Blvd end at the Holden Centre as the VFL Magpies overcame Geelong in a thriller on Saturday morning.

From trailing by as many as 35 points, Josh Thomas received a 50m penalty and kicked a goal with seconds remaining to give Collingwood a two-point victory.

“I thought we worked into the game really well,” coach Jared Rivers said post-match.

“There were some really good signs in the last 10 minutes of that quarter. It was a good first hit-out.”

With 12 AFL-listed players on the field at various stages of the game, rotations were heavy as Rivers directed the VFL Magpies for the first time.

Speaking to Collingwood Media, the new coach broke down the game in the following categories:

“All the AFL boys were fantastic. Shaz (Matt Scharenberg) was really good down back and Broomy (Tim Broomhead) inside was always going to be good. Lachie Keeffe was really good. His pressure at the ball was great and his attitude to work hard was first class.”

Liam Mackie in his first game looked really good down back. Sam McLarty and Mitch McCarthy are so raw and so young. We’ve got to understand that as a coaching group. But we’ve got so much potential to work with. You can see the signs that they’ve going to be pretty good players in the future.

“We’ve got Michael Chippendale in from North Adelaide as well as Alex Woodward who we saw a lot of today. He’s an inside mid who worked really well. Stephen Tahana is another Adelaide boy who came in and impressed in the backline. We’ve got a few new faces who are showing some impressive signs.”
