Collingwood's VFL side has been overwhelmed by a more determined Essendon outfit during a sloppy clash at Windy Hill.

While neither side will leave the Bombers' headquarters proud of the skills displayed, it was the home team who created more opportunities and took out a 80-point victory.

Coach Jared Rivers pulled out all the tricks in the book to try and overturn Essendon's 43-point half time lead.

Lynden Dunn went forward in the third term, and rookie Sam McLarty did the same late in the game in an attempt to turn momentum in Collingwood's favour.

However despite goals to Jarryd Blair, Ben Crocker and Chris Mayne early in the third quarter, the VFL Magpies couldn't peg back the lead.

Essendon ran out 80-point winners, squaring it's 2017 record at one win and one loss. The VFL Magpies also have one win on the board, and will face Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval next Saturday.

More to come.
