VFL: Northern Blues withstand comeback

Just as was the case in 1892, Collingwood have lost to a team wearing navy Blue at Victoria Park.

On this occasion it was the VFL’s Northern Blues who proved too good for the Jared Rivers-led Collingwood side.

The Blues led from the outset and never looked like surrendering control. Collingwood had just two goals at three-quarter time, despite having just one less shot on goal than the visitors.

Two Black and White goals in three quarters was quickly surpassed by another four in the final term.

Chris Mayne, Kayle Kirby, Jarryd Blair and Josh Daicos provided spark at the Yarra Falls end to make a contest of the round four clash.

Ultimately, the run was left too late as the VFL Pies fell 13 points short and to their third loss of the home and away season.

As the only multiple goal-kicker of the day, Blair was named Collingwood’s best player, while Matthew Scharenberg was also recognised for an impressive role across half back.
