Two senior Magpies will press their claims for a return to senior football when tested on the training track later this week.

Jamie Elliott (ankle) and Travis Varcoe (hamstring) has been sorely missed in recent weeks, but will be assessed by the club’s medical staff after the team’s main training session ahead of Sunday’s clash with Hawthorn.

“Jamie will be on the track this week, and he is on target to complete the main session, so that is really good news,” General Manager of Football Geoff Walsh told Collingwood Media’s Blackmores Injury Update.

“We will see how he is later in the week, but I would say that (if he passes) the test he will take part in this week, then we would be happy enough to declare him for selection.

“We will wait and see on that, but so far, the news looks promising for Jamie later in the week.”

Varcoe, too, will undergo a fitness test on his injured hamstring. He has not played since suffering the strain against Geelong in round six.

“Travis has made some really good progress,” Walsh continued.

“We would expect that Travis will join in the main sessions this week and complete all or most of them. That would see him also be made available this week.

“The next three or four days in terms of how he pulls up will be crucial around that decision but we are hopeful, too, that Trav will be in the category where we can declare him available for selection.”

Wingman Daniel Wells, meanwhile, is still a few weeks from making his return from a calf injury.

“Wellsy will join in full training next week.

“He has developed his running in the last four or five days quite significantly and next week will have him in full training.

“After that week of full training, we will be able to assess just exactly where he is at in terms of a return to playing.”
