Midfielder Levi Greenwood appears set to spend a week on the sidelines as a result of his clash with Essendon’s Zach Merrett on Saturday.

Greenwood was charged with engaging in rough conduct during the third quarter of Collingwood’s 37-point loss to the Bombers.

He collided with Merrett at half back in an incident which resulted in a strong reaction from a number of Essendon players.

The match review panel on Monday labelled the hit “careless conduct” with medium impact to the head. A two-match suspension can be reduced to one game if Greenwood and the Magpies accept the sanction.

After sitting out the first two games of the home and away season with injury, Greenwood has played 13 consecutive matches.

If the suspension is accepted, he’ll be available to return for Collingwood’s round 18 game against West Coast.

Travis Varcoe is the only other Magpie to have missed a game through suspension this season. The 29-year-old accepted a one-match ban for a late bump on the Western Bulldogs’ Luke Dahlhaus.
