Collingwood will add Sydney youngster Sam Murray to its defensive stocks next season, after a deal involving several draft picks was settled on Thursday morning.

The Magpies received the 20-year-old as well as a fourth round selection in the 2017 National Draft and a future third-round selection in next year’s draft.

In exchange, Sydney received Collingwood’s future second-round selection for 2018.

Murray, a 20-year-old defender, spent the past two seasons on Sydney’s rookie list, after he was originally drafted to the club via Victoria’s Ovens and Murray League.

Collingwood’s National Recruiting Manager Derek Hine said Murray’s leg speed and ability to break the lines from defence will make him a key asset in the club’s future plans.

SAM MURRAY: The story so far.

“Sam is a product of a great football system at Sydney, and is a player we identified as filling a key need on our list as a skilful defender who takes the game on.

“We were also impressed by his ability to transform his game from a forward into a defender in the NEAFL this year, and I know our coaches are looking forward to working with him in 2018 and beyond.”

Originally a small forward, Murray excelled after being moved into the backline this year, averaging 22 disposals per game, using his hard running and long left foot to advantage.

Collingwood will begin November’s National Draft with pick No. 6.

The final National Draft order will be confirmed when trading closes at 2pm on Thursday.
