Collingwood star Steele Sidebottom has taken the lead in the AFL Coaches' Association Champion Player of the Year award.

Sidebottom polled seven votes after being among the Magpies' best players in their big win over Essendon on ANZAC Day.

He now has 31 votes for the season, three more than second-placed Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe.

Collingwood players took home all the votes after the victory over the Bombers.
