VFL: Pies topple Tigers

Collingwood returned to winning ways with a victory over Werribee at Victoria Park on Sunday.

The Magpies found themselves on the outside of the VFL’s top-8 after Saturday’s results. The 58-point win sees them return to the finals picture ahead of next week’s bye.

Josh Smith
made a brisk return to form, booting three goals in his first game back from injury. Darcy Moore showed positive signs in limited game time coming back from a hamstring complaint.

A brief burst of heavy rain in the opening term made scoring difficult, despite the home side’s territorial dominance. Alex Woodward savoured the wet conditions and was dominant around stoppages for the Pies early on.

Two goals to Smith in the second term, including a superb effort from hard against the boundary, gave the Pies a healthy lead heading into the main break.

Werribee was good enough to keep the game seemingly within reach during the third. The Pies’ class shone through for them to kick away late on and earn a much-needed win.
