VFL: Pies tune up for finals with win

Collingwood overcame a sluggish first half to keep its hopes of a VFL top-four spot alive.

After a cagey opening, Sandringham dominated the second quarter to take a surprise 16-point lead into the main break.

But the Magpies responded with renewed vigour in the third term. The home side piled on seven goals to one to flip the script, leading by 16 at three-quarter time.

The Pies quelled any chance of a Sandringham fight back with a dominant fourth last quarter to run away with a big win.

Tyson Goldsack
made a successful return from injury in defence, ably assisted by youngsters Flynn Appleby and Tyler Brown.
Josh Daicos was impressive through the middle while the Pies had an even spread of goalkickers. Max Lynch showed impressive signs playing predominantly as a forward in the second half.

The result puts the Pies at least temporarily into fourth spot. They will be made to sweat on the result of Willimastown’s fixture away to Casey later in the afternoon to see if they will remain there.
