AFLW: Grant ready for big season

AFLW: Grant ready for the challenge We caught up with Emma Grant ahead of next week's AFLW game against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

It’s been an exciting couple of months both on and off the field for Collingwood midfielder Emma Grant.

She is thrilled to again lead her team as Collingwood’s co-vice-captain for a second season in a row alongside Ash Brazill.

“Vice-captain of the Collingwood Football Club is an absolute honour and I’m very humbled to be voted that through my peers and coaches,” Grant told

“We’ve got some young and new faces in the leadership group and obviously with Steph in charge it’s super exciting to see what we can produce."

Away from the field, the 29-year-old recently celebrated her wedding to a former Collingwood teammate.

The two met while playing football for Bendigo Thunder in the former Victorian Women’s Football League.

“I married my best friend in Leah French which was amazing,” Grant said.

“It was really awesome to have a few of the girls (players) up there as well as to celebrate with me.”

With the AFLW season opener against Geelong just over a week away, Grant says she’s pleased with her team’s progress over the pre-season.

“The first block of pre-season was all about fundamentals and skills with lots of conditioning and strength,” she said.

“Now we’re getting into the really fun stuff being practice matches and match stimulation, so the buzz around the club is awesome.”

In terms of expectations, Grant says her team is aiming as high as can be.

But, ultimately, she says she’s looking forward to seeing improvement as a team and as individuals.

“Over the first two years we’ve won three games and obviously we want to do better than that.

“The premiership is our goal and we are going to do everything we can in our power to get that.”
