The VFLW Magpies have registered a four-point victory over Melbourne University in Morwell on Saturday.

It was a close contest from the very start with the Mugars taking a 3-point lead at the end of the first term.

The Pies lifted their intensity in the second quarter which saw them regain the lead at the major break.

But with the Pies unable to score in the third, relief came in a goal from Katelyn Lee early in the fourth before the Mugars managed get two goals on the board.

Kate Lynch then followed, kicking a beauty from a set shot that took the Pies into a 5-point lead towards the end of the last quarter.

But it all came down to the final minute of the match when the Mugars had an opportunity to score but could only manage a behind.

The Magpies were able to walkaway with their ninth straight victory, 6.4 (40) to 5.6 (36).

Magpie co-captain, Grace Buchan said her team knew today’s game would be a big challenge but it was something they were prepared for.

“We came into the game knowing it would be tough and we took into consideration that Melbourne Uni play a similar style of footy to us,” Buchan told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“We all just performed our roles and played to our strengths whether that be offensively, defensively and through the midfield.”

Sophie Alexander was influential up forward, taking several strong marks and managing two early goals.

The return of Stacey Livingstone and Jordyn Allen into the Pies’ defensive line-up created solid pressure that stunted the Mugar’s forwards.

Chloe Molloy continued to impress with great ball movement and force around the contest.

The Pies will next head across the road to the Swinburne Centre where they’ll face a tough clash against Richmond on Sunday 28th at 11am.
