With just under a week until the 2019 NAB AFLW Draft, the final order has been revealed.

Collingwood will enter the national draft with five picks - 67, 74, 82, 89, 94.

The Pies’ AFLW performance analyst and list manager, Jess Burger says despite having a series of low picks, the club is confident in the talent it will secure on Tuesday.

“Last year we managed to lock in the best available talent at the earliest opportunities available to us and we are hoping to do the same again this time around,” Burger told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“We feel over the last two drafts we’ve been able to put together a really strong group of players who have added significant value to the list both on and off the field.

“We’ll continue to draft with that in mind to ensure we have diversity and a range of great characters amongst the playing group.”

Having given up several picks for Brianna Davey during April’s trade period, Burger says the Pies are extremely happy and comfortable with the decision that was made.

“Bri brings a wealth of experience to the team and she’s establishing herself really well within the club having taken to the field with our VFLW team this season.

“We know she’s going to bring some really exciting football to our AFLW program and we can’t wait to see her in action.”

How does the draft work?

To be eligible for the draft, footballers must be 18 years of age in the same year that they are picked for.

Players who wish to be considered for selection are required to nominate themselves in any State for the draft (one State only).

Teams can make selections from players of its state-affiliate side such as their VFLW team. They can also select any player who has been delisted by an AFLW club.  

Up to 102 draft selections will be made on Tuesday.

At the conclusion of the draft, each club will see 30 players form its list with teams having had the option to sign up to three rookie players (who must not have been on an Australian football list for three years). Clubs have no requirement to sign rookies.

With four new teams joining the competition in 2020, Tuesday will mark their first time the teams will be active in the draft - St Kilda (Pick No.5), Richmond (Pick No.7), Gold Coast Suns (Pick No.18) and the West Coast Eagles (Pick No.19).

So what’s in it for the Pies?

Alongside the five new draftees, the Magpies secured Gaelic Football rookie, Aishling Sheridan earlier this year. Chloe Molloy will also return to the list having been forced onto the sidelines with a lisfranc injury throughout the 2019 season.

Burger says the Pies are in search of players who offer more than just an on field role and who will contribute to the positive culture that has been established.

“We want to invest in players who are ready to have immediate impact at the highest level but who will also continue to help us create an exciting style of footy that we saw throughout the club’s VFLW season,” Burger said.

“In the current situation that we are in for the draft, we are confident and excited to see the talent we can secure on Tuesday.”

The 2019 NAB AFLW Draft will be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Tuesday 22 October.
