Collingwood AFLW midfielder Mattea Breed will be placed on the Inactive List for the 2025 season as she recovers from patellar tendon surgery.

The 24-year-old underwent surgery on her left knee due to an ongoing issue experienced during the off-season.

Drafted to the Hawks with pick four in the AFLW Season Eight Supplementary Draft, Breed arrived at the Pies during the 2024 AFLW Trade period.

The Northern Territory product had an incredible 2024 season, averaging 13.6 disposals, totalled 50 clearances and finished second for the 2024 Virgin Australia AFLW Mark of the Year award.

“This is unfortunate news for Mattea, who’s only recently joined the program but has already shown great potential and dedication,” Burger said.

“Although this is a challenging setback, she has shown incredible character and resilience. Mattea will continue to support off the field and remains strongly connected with the group.

“We’ll ensure she feels fully supported during this period. Our medical team, coaches, staff and players will all wrap our arms around her throughout the recovery journey.”

In other news, Collingwood VFLW player Lily-Rose Williamson has been elevated to the AFLW list as a replacement player for Breed.

Williamson joined Collingwood’s VFLW program this year following three seasons and eight games for Essendon’s AFLW team.

The 20-year-old has had an impressive 2025 season thus far, averaging 16.9 disposals, 5.8 tackles and represented in this year’s inaugural rebel VFLW State Team in April.

“With injury comes opportunity, and we are pleased to welcome Lily-Rose to our senior list,” Burger said.

“Since arriving at Collingwood in our VFLW program, she has shown great drive to improve, bringing with her valuable football knowledge and experience.

“We’re excited for Lily-Rose’s attributes to be transferred across from the VFLW program and embedded further into the Club and AFLW squad.”
