Dayne Beams enters the final home and away round of the season as one of only two players in the competition with the chance of taking home the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.

The 22-year-old was the only Collingwood player to collect a vote (four) in Saturday’s match against the West Coast Eagles and sits in second place on the overall leaderboard.

It is the second successive week that Beams has been the only Collingwood player to poll.

He is a solid 10 votes behind Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin who leads the way with 103 votes. With 93 votes, Beams is one ahead of Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett and five in front of Essendon’s Jobe Watson.

For Beams to win, he will require the maximum 10 votes from Collingwood’s match against Essendon on Saturday night and rely on Cotchin missing out on receiving any votes all together.

He was again the Magpies’ highest possession winner on the weekend, tying with Scott Pendlebury with 30 touches. Beams also managed to lay six tackles, take nine marks and kick his 26th goal for the season.

Remarkably, Beams’ 30 disposals is his equal-lowest possession tally since round 15, underlining the consistency that has been his trademark this season.

If past performances are any indication, Beams’ record against Essendon means that he should stand a solid chance of making a last gasp charge at tying with Cotchin.

In his past four meetings with Essendon, Beams has recorded 29, 12, 25 and 32 possessions respectively and has kicked at least one goal in each of them.

Cotchin, on the other hand, has not broken the 20 disposal mark in his past two meetings with Port Adelaide (his opponent this week), but his recent form, which has seen him register 30 or more possessions in his past three games, means that he should enter Sunday’s match as the Power’s number one midfield threat.

Pendlebury is the only other Collingwood player to feature in the top 10, sitting in equal ninth with Brett Deledio on 73 votes.
