Collingwood’s batch of young players will officially begin pre-season training at the Westpac Centre on Wednesday.

A full 68 days since their final match of the 2014 season, the Magpies with between one and four years of senior experience will report for duty.

High Performance Manager Bill Davoren says the players will be combining their conditioning and fitness work with some traditional football training when they return.

“They’re back in on Wednesday, which brings us to a total of around 22 guys,” Davoren told collingwoodfc.com.au.

“They’ll be straight into it on Wednesday. We’ll be doing some conditioning work, we’ll do some testing, and then some football, just getting kicked in and getting hands going.

“There will be some conditioning from a running point of view and then in the afternoon some weights, so that will pretty much be the norm for the week.

The aim for the first four days is to basically start the process. It’s preliminary work and getting them used to what’s coming.

“The main emphasis is on the foundation and the work around running, and also the kicking and getting the foundation of the kicking back again in the legs.”

Once the season ended in defeat against Hawthorn on 29 August, Davoren and the club’s medical team assessed each player before helping them tailor a program best suited to their needs ahead of their off-season break.

“Every player gets assessed from a medical point of view and we look at what their health status is,” he said.

“Around that we shape up programs that are geared towards, in most cases, looking at some of their weaknesses and trying to get some improvements in certain areas.

“There are certain players who have pursued a more running-based program, some have gone after a more strength based program, and then there are others that are in rehab who have got some limitations in what they can do.

“You pretty much get to the point this week where we reassess everyone as to what they’ve done over the last eight to nine weeks and fine-tune those programs from there going forward.

“Whilst football is pretty normal across the board, some of the conditioning programs may need to be individualised.”

Davoren confirmed Darcy Moore, who has joined Collingwood under the father-son rule, will be among the players on the track this Wednesday.
