VFL vice-captain Ben Moloney will take no further part in the Magpies’ finals campaign after suffering a broken leg in Saturday’s victory over Williamstown.

Moloney on Sunday had surgery to repair a fractured left leg.

The midfielder was helped from the ground in the third quarter and was confined to crutches as he watched his teammates defeat the Seagulls at IKON Park.

Collingwood’s VFL general manager Luke Gatti on Monday provided an update on the highly-regarded onballer.

“Ben went to the Epworth on Saturday night after the game where he has since had surgery on a broken leg and some ligament damage,” Gatti said.

“It’s a huge blow for us given the role he plays for the team.

“Despite the bad news, he’s still in high spirits and is really keen to do whatever he can to help his teammates in an off-field capacity.”

Moloney wasn’t the only Magpie to be struck by the injury curse on Saturday.

Jack Frost and captain Jack Hellier both failed to finish the game after injuries in the second and third quarters respectively.

Frost injured his ankle in a marking contest near the interchange bench. He came from the ground and didn’t take part in the second half.

“He went to hospital at half time,” Gatti said.

“X-rays have confirmed there’s no break in his leg, but we’re waiting to find out the severity of the injury.”

Meanwhile Hellier will have to wait until later in the week to learn the extent of a shoulder injury sustained in the third term.

The captain told Collingwood Media post-game that having the Semi Final week off will be a boost for some sore bodies.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” he said.

“We did have a few blokes who are a bit sore at the moment who are going to be lapping it up and recovering well for this week.”

The VFL Magpies will play the winner of Footscray and Essendon, who will meet on Sunday afternoon at North Port Oval.
