Current Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley was the inaugural winner of the Rising Star Award while playing for the Brisbane Bears in 1993.

Rising Star Rules

To be eligible for the AFL Rising Star Award, nominated players must be under the age of 21 at 1 January 2015 and have played no more than 10 AFL games to the start of that season.

They must not have been suspended by the AFL or State League tribunals during the season (as with the Brownlow Medal, players found guilty of certain offences and fined or reprimanded by the Tribunal remain eligible to win the award).

In 2015 there were 210 eligible players, representing 26 per cent of players on AFL lists.

The judging panel

League administrators and All-Australian team selectors vote for their top five of the 22 nominees. The player who receives the most votes is deemed the winner and is awarded the Ron Evans Medal.
