For the best part of a decade, Collingwood has been the AFL’s king of the road.

Between 2006 and 2012, the Magpies won 24 of their 32 matches outside of Victoria, some of which rank among the club’s greatest ever triumphs.

But in 2013, its record of interstate success has crumbled.

Collingwood has won only one of its four games on the road this year (against Brisbane in round 10).

Usually a formidable opponent when playing away from the confines of the MCG and Etihad Stadium, Collingwood has been rolled by Fremantle (27 points), Port Adelaide (35 points) and Gold Coast (seven points).

The only opportunity for the club to restore its record somewhat will be when it takes on Sydney at ANZ Stadium in round 20.

The weight of history is on Collingwood’s side. It won seven straight games at the venue between 2006 and 2012 and only relented when it went down to the Swans in last year’s Preliminary Final.

It’s also worth noting that the Pies have ended two of their lesser known interstate streaks this season.

The loss to Port Adelaide in round 14 ended a run of eight successive wins at AAMI Stadium between 2006 and 2012, while Saturday’s loss to Gold Coast was the club’s first at Carrara (Metricon Stadium). The Magpies won their first six games at the ground – five against the Brisbane Bears and one against the Suns.
