Collingwood veteran Ben Johnson will undergo a shoulder reconstruction on Tuesday.

Johnson, 31, was substituted out of the game at half time of last Friday's round six win over the Western Bulldogs after suffering the right shoulder injury during the first half.

The 227-game premiership player will commence an extensive rehabilitation program once he's recovered from the surgery, with a view to making himself available for selection before the end of the season.

Johnson began the season at VFL level after overcoming a pre-season hamstring injury, and had played the last three AFL matches.

His 2011 campaign was interrupted by a mid-season hamstring injury, but he still managed 16 AFL appearances including the club's three finals.

Originally drafted from the Preston under 18 side with the 62nd overall pick in the 1999 draft, Johnson has twice been a runner-up in the best-and-fairest (2004, 2006) to go with his 2010 premiership medallion.
