Collingwood’s last two Copeland Trophy winners were the only Magpies named in the 2014 AFL All-Australian squad.

Captain Scott Pendlebury and midfielder Dayne Beams were among the 40 men chosen by the All-Australian selection committee when the squad was lodged on Tuesday evening.

The traditional 22-man All-Australian team will then be named in position on 16 September.

Pendlebury, the winner of the 2011 and 2013 Copeland Trophies, has been named in every All-Australian team since 2010 while Beams, who took out the best and fairest in 2012, was an All-Australian representative in the same year.

It is a just reward for two of the club’s most consistent performers.

Pendlebury, in his first season as captain, won more disposals than any other Magpie (596 in 21 games).

He averaged 28.4 touches per game, leading the Magpies in handballs (304), tackles (116), free kicks (38), contested possessions (273) and uncontested possessions (equal with Steele Sidebottom on 314), while his 2.43 rebound 50s per game represented a career-high.

The skipper ranked second for kicks (292), score assists (22) and inside 50s (72), and he kicked 13 goals – the sixth most of any Magpie.

Pendlebury was named on the interchange bench in 2010 and 2012 and on a wing in 2011 and 2013. He was named in the 40-man squad in 2009.

For Beams, 2014 marked a welcome return to full fitness after he missed the first 15 games of the previous season with a nagging quad injury.

In 19 games, he won 516 disposals (second only to Pendlebury), led the team in clearances (115), ranked second for contested possessions (232) and laid exactly 100 tackles, placing him behind Pendlebury and Jarryd Blair.

Beams also kicked 23 goals, behind only Travis Cloke (39) and Jamie Elliott (33) on the club’s goal kicking tally.

He was named on the wing in the 2012 All-Australian team.
