When things are put in perspective, football on ANZAC Day is a fairly young tradition.

Collingwood and Essendon have been lining up on April 25 at the MCG since 1995. For twenty years the meetings have been the highlight of the home and away calendar. They have always drawn massive crowds and have often featured dramatic finishes.

Yet on ANZAC Day, football’s standing in Australian society is put into perspective.

2016 represents 100 years since the first ANZAC Day commemorations of 1916. After 100 years of recognising those who have served for our country, the feeling of pride is just as strong and the memories of those lost continue to be honoured.

Collingwood’s connection to the ANZACs extends beyond 1995.

57 men have combined a life in the Black and White with time spent representing Australia at war.

49 returned. Eight made the ultimate sacrifice didn’t return to their families, friends, coaches and teammates.

When 22 current Magpies run onto the MCG on April 25, 2016, they will carry the memories of these heroes not only in their minds, but on their guernseys.

As they did in 2015, the Magpies’ will wear a special commemorative jumper when they take on the Bombers.

In addition to having a poppy with ‘Lest We Forget’ printed on the left chest, a number of other features represent the significance of ANZAC Day.

The names of fallen Collingwood players are printed on the inner back of the neck, and the silhouettes of two soldiers proudly standing back to back sits on the bottom of the guernsey.

The famous ANZAC ode that we hear so solemnly announced sits above the player’s number, while the Rising Sun logo so synonymous with ANZAC Day is printed on the right chest.

Just as ANZAC Day so perfectly represents our war heroes, this guernsey symbolises a proud Collingwood connection to those who fought.

It is available to the public, with part of the proceeds from all sales being donated to the RSL.
