Collingwood defender Ben Reid was restricted to running drills on Wednesday at the Holden Centre as he continues his bid to return to full training.

Reid's season was cut short in August last year after surgery for the posterior cruciate ligament in his knee. It was an injury he carried since round four.

Speculation arose in mid-December that Reid had suffered another soft-tissue setback but the club hosed it down, saying the 2011 All Australian was being managed towards a return to full training in late January or early February.

In front of about 100 people at the Magpies' training session, Reid spent much of his time doing running drills.

The 27-year-old has played just 26 games in his past three seasons, including 17 last year. Persistent soft-tissue injuries have largely been his problem.

Midfield recruit Daniel Wells was also on light duties as he recovers from a calf strain.

Wells, 31, spent much of his time jogging and kicking the football.

The former North Melbourne player has had his fair share of injury battles in recent times and was limited to 12 games in 2014-15.

He lined up in 19 matches last year but was twice forced to the sidelines, with calf and Achilles injuries the cause.

Collingwood signed Wells as an unrestricted free agent to a three-year deal at the end of last season. The onballer will be 35 when he comes out of contract.

Dynamic forward Jamie Elliott impressed on the track in his return from the Christmas break.

He did not manage a game last year after having back surgery to deal with a pars defect injury.

Fellow forward Alex Fasolo was also training, albeit with a strapped left shoulder after he had it operated on at the end of last season.

Defender Tyson Goldsack was involved in contested marking drills and appeared to move freely in his comeback from hip surgery.
