This year, November 4th marks the beginning of the celebration of Diwali!

Collingwood welcomed Sundar Iyer from the Hindu Council of Australia to the Holden Centre as part of an education session around the celebration of Diwali.

AFL defender Jordan Roughead, Netballer Shimona Nelson and AFLW players Sarah Rowe and Brianna Davey seized the opportunity to learn more about Diwali and its history. 

Diwali is a celebration that occurs over 5 days, where millions of people across the world illuminate their homes and streets with candles and lanterns. 

Primarily celebrated in India, Diwali is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Newar Buddhists globally. 

Families gather to pray for prosperity and rid the darkness and evil forces with an extravagant display of lights, candles, firecrackers and fireworks. 

If you want to join in the celebrations, Diwali festivals are held by local governments and community groups across Australia every year, and are often promoted as the Festival of Lights.
