Collingwood forward Aliesha Newman has today informed the club of her decision to explore an opportunity with Sydney’s expansion side for the upcoming AFL Women’s season.

Newman was traded to Collingwood in 2020 following four seasons with the Melbourne Football Club.

Across her two seasons in the black and white, the 26-year-old played 14 games for the club including the 2022 qualifying final against Brisbane.

During her time at the Pies, Newman made a significant contribution to the club’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs which included being an ambassador for the ‘Free the Flag’ campaign. For the league, Newman re-designed the AFLW logo with Aboriginal art for the 2021 Indigenous Round.

Collingwood’s Head of Women’s Football Jess Burger said the club supports Newman’s decision to depart and thanks her for her time.

“We understand and support ‘Newy’s’ decision to explore her options elsewhere,” Burger said.

“’Newy’ is a much-loved member of our program and has not only been a valued member of the team but has also made a significant contribution in the club’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community programs.

“We thank her for her time with us and wish her the best with her new chapter at the Swans.”
