Jakob Ryan will make his AFL debut this Friday night when the Pies take on the Lions at Marvel Stadium.

Steele Sidebottom will also return to the side after missing last week’s win over the Cats due to a foot injury.

Captain Darcy Moore (hamstring), Jordan De Goey (glute) and Bobby Hill (hamstring) will all miss the clash through injury.

In the absence of Darcy Moore, Brayden Maynard will captain the Club for the first time.

Edward Allan, Josh Carmichael, Mason Cox and Reef McInnes have been named as emergencies, with the substitute to be announced 60 minutes prior to the start of Friday night’s match.

18-year-old Ryan was recruited from the Glenelg Football Club in South Australia and selected at pick 28 in the 2022 National Draft. The dashing defender has played 14 VFL games across 2023 where he has averaged 19.5 disposals.

Coach Craig McRae spoke highly of Ryan at Wednesday’s press conference.

“He’s been in great form for a number of weeks now and we’ve had him as emergency a couple of times,” said McRae.

“He’s a young South Australian lad, he’ll be a crowd favourite with his haircut.

“It’s exciting to give someone an opportunity this time of year – he gets it through reward and playing above the level at VFL.”

McRae also spoke about Hill and De Goey’s injuries at Wednesday’s press conference.

“(Bobby) expressed a little bit of hamstring awareness and there’s a risk reward attached to this time of year and how much you’re willing to take on certain things and this is not the time we have to take as much risk as potentially in a few weeks’ time,” said McRae.

“We’re anticipating that he (De Goey) will be right (for next week) but again it’s a risk versus reward situation, how much do you want to take a risk. If it was a Grand Final, I’d be pushing hard for all of them to play to be honest, but we’re not in that situation right now. We’ll look after those guys and make sure they’re one hundred percent right whenever that is.”

The clash will also mark Will Hoskin-Elliott's 200th game at AFL level. Selected by the GWS GIANTS from the Western Jets and Sunshine North Football Club at pick four in the 2011 National Draft, Hoskin-Elliott played 52 games for the GIANTS before being traded to Collingwood at the end of the 2016 season.
