The 96th E.W. Copeland Trophy will be staged on Friday night as the Collingwood Football Club celebrates its 16th AFL/VFL premiership.

Since 1927 the E. W. Copeland Trophy has been awarded to Collingwood’s AFL best and fairest.

Collingwood greats such as Bob Rose, Murray Weideman, Len Thompson, Peter Daicos, Tony Shaw, Nathan Buckley, Paul Licuria and Scott Pendlebury are players who have received the trophy on multiple occasions.33

With a host of awards on offer, the highest honour in the Copeland Trophy has a multitude of potential winners, including Jack Crisp who is looking to complete a hat-trick of best and fairest victories.

The award perpetuates the memory of Ernest W. Copeland, who was secretary of Collingwood from 1895 to 1923. Renowned as a tireless worker with a friendly demeanour, Copeland stood as one of the most revered football personalities in football throughout his long career at the Club.

With the night almost upon us, here’s all you need to know ahead of the 2023 Copeland Trophy.

Contenders

Nick Daicos

After finishing seventh in his debut season last year, Nick Daicos is one of the genuine contenders for this year’s Copeland. Playing 20 games,  Daicos averaged 31.2 disposals and produced multiple best on ground performances including winning the Anzac Day Medal in 2023. Named the Coaches Association’s Best Young Player of the Year, Nick could well add a first Copeland to his trophy cabinet.

Darcy Moore

In his first year as captain, Darcy Moore took the competition by storm. Named in the backline in the All-Australian team, Moore established himself as one of the premier leaders and defenders in the competition. He finished on the podium in last year’s Copeland and could well rise up a couple of places this year.

Josh Daicos

Not many Pies had more consistent years than Josh Daicos, with the wingman plying his trade week in week out in 2023. A maiden All-Australia blazer will have him receiving votes in numerous games, as he looks to challenge his brother for a first Copeland.

Jordan De Goey

Despite missing five games throughout the home and away season, De Goey put together one of the best years of his career to put himself in contention for a maiden Best & Fairest. Doing damage through the midfield, De Goey became a consistent ball winner and continued to hit the scoreboard as one his side’s most important players.

Isaac Quaynor

Hardly losing a one-on-one contest all year, Quaynor became one of the most respected defenders in the competition. Quaynor didn’t miss a game all year and will be firmly on the radar to receive votes right throughout the season.
