Collingwood have gone down to Casey in their Round 11 VFL match, losing by nine points to the Demons in wintery conditions at Mission Whitten Oval on Saturday night.
While the rain seemed to subside come the first siren, the effects of a day’s worth of downpour was on full display with both teams struggling to take clean possession of the ball.
Taking almost 21 minutes for either side to find the big sticks, it was Casey who made the first blow, while the Pies only managing a single behind to end the term.
With the ground starting to dry, players had more control in the second quarter. The Demons looked damaging early with their forward entries, however AFL-listed defenders Jakob Ryan and Joel Cochran combining for 10 intercept possessions to lock down Collingwood’s defence.
Despite Casey adding another goal to their score, it was second-year ruck Iliro Smit who finally got Collingwood on the board after receiving a free kick from a ruck infringement.
Premiership Pie Mason Cox was able to add another to Collingwood’s scoreline, bringing the Magpies within 10 points going into the main break.
The Pies came out firing in the second half, with a quick transition kickstarted from a 50-metre penalty given to Tew Jiath leading to a strong mark by exciting forward Charlie West, however the strong wind made sure to halt Collingwood’s celebrations after blowing West’s kick to the right.
It took Collingwood only 90 seconds to answer to Casey’s goal, with VFL-listed recruit Riley Mason sneaking a goal.
Despite keeping the Demons to only 29% accuracy in front of goal in the third quarter, Casey still managed to hold an 18-point lead at the final break.
With nothing to lose heading into the final quarter, the Pies looked to leave it all out on Mission Whitten Oval. VFL-listed recruit Ned Byrne snuck in a goal in his second game in the black and white, while the strong breeze got in the way of Cox finding his second.
Just 10 days after hearing his name called in the Mid-Season Draft, Roan Steele kicked his first goal in the black and white, aptly against the side he is a two-time Best and Fairest runner up with.
VFL-recruit Josh Browne quickly followed with his own goal, bringing the Pies within two points midway through the final term.
It wasn’t meant to be however, with Casey kicking to quick goals of their own to bring Collingwood’s deficit to nine points at the final siren.
