Collingwood’s VFL side have returned to the winners list in spectacular fashion, with young forward Charlie West kicking a goal after the siren – his sixth of the day – to secure a three-point win over Sandringham at the AIA Vitality Centre.

The Pies were firing early, with West quickly booting two goals in the opening term. VFL recruit Brady Grey quickly followed with two of his own, seeing Collingwood go into the quarter time break with seven goals on the board.

Starting the game with intent, former Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell looked lively in the first quarter, finishing with 12 disposals and four score involvements.

The second quarter in the same manner, VFL recruit and former Hawk Josh Bennetts added his own goal to Collingwood’s tally before a classy end-to-end transition kickstarted by Premiership Pie Oleg Markov saw him add another six points to the Magpie’s score to bring the margin to 44 points.

Sandringham quickly flipped the switch however, kicking the next six goals to bring the margin to under 10 points heading into half time.

Kicking back with the breeze, West kicked his third and fourth goals of the game during the third term, giving the Magpies a comfortable 25-point lead at three quarter time.

With the Yarra River end of the AIA Vitality Centre becoming the end for goal kicking, Sandringham kicked five straight goals in the final term to take the lead for the first time of the match at the 13-minute mark.

While Collingwood were held goalless for majority of the final term, 19-year-old West rose to the occasion to kick his fifth of the match to bring the Pies back in front in the dying stages.

The celebrations were short-lived however, with Sandringham finding a way to return serve to take the lead back.

With the Pies refusing to give up even in the final seconds, a miraculous kick forward from Grey landed squarely on the chest of West.

Taking his time as he waited for the siren to ring around the AIA Vitality Centre, the Collingwood-faithful who packed the fence held their breaths as West launched from 35 metres out.

Fans erupted into cheers as his kick sailed through for his sixth goal of the match, and securing Collingwood’s seventh win of the VFL season.
